Puffing Billy with kids and toddlers: a planning guide
Puffing Billy is a popular family outing. This guide covers what we know about travelling with children. Rules can change. Check the official site for current rules, prices and details. For questions we cannot answer, such as prams, contact the railway.
PB Watch is an unofficial service. We are not part of Puffing Billy Railway.
Tickets for babies and toddlers
Every ticket must be booked before the day. This includes infants and toddlers. Do not turn up with a baby and no ticket. The station sells no tickets on the day.
Pick the right journey
Long rides can be hard for small children.
| Journey | One way | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Belgrave to Menzies Creek | 30 minutes | Friday to Sunday. A short first ride. |
| Belgrave to Lakeside | 60 minutes | Every day. The usual family choice. |
| Belgrave to Gembrook | 1 hour 50 minutes | Friday to Sunday. Long for small children. |

Sitting on the sills
Children under 4 may not sit on the sills. Children aged 4 to 13 need an adult to watch them. See the full rules in our sill guide.
What to pack
- A jumper or rain jacket for everyone. The carriages have open sides.
- Water and snacks. Check what the railway allows on board.
- A hat and sunscreen for summer.
- Wipes and a change of clothes for babies and toddlers.
- Your ticket confirmation, on paper or on your phone.
Timing the day
- Check the departure time of your outbound train. It sets your return train.
- Check in at the booking office 60 minutes before departure. Check-in closes 30 minutes before. The train does not wait.
- Allow time for toilets before you board.
- Plan the lake stop at Lakeside around nap times. See what to do at Lakeside.
School holidays
School holidays are the busiest time. Book early. See school holiday tickets.
If the day is sold out
Try another departure, another day or a weekday. Seats for a family of four can disappear when seats for two are still open. Try a smaller party size to test whether the day is fully sold out. If you need one exact date, a seat alert helps. PB Watch emails you when seats open for your dates and party. It costs A$10 and does not book tickets for you.
