Sitting on the Puffing Billy carriage sills: rules and tips

Passengers sit on the open carriage sills of a Puffing Billy train with their legs hanging out, as the train crosses a trestle bridge behind a steam engine.

Many people picture Puffing Billy with passengers sitting on the open sides of the carriages, legs hanging out. This is called "sitting on the sills". The railway allows it under rules. This guide lists the rules we know. The railway can change them. Read the current rules on the official site before you travel.

The rules

  • Age 4 and over. Children under 4 may not sit on the sills.
  • Ages 4 to 13. An adult must watch them. One adult may watch up to 2 children within arm's reach. An adult on a sill watches one child who is also on a sill.
  • Stay seated. Wristbands must stay visible. No standing and no climbing.

What this means for a family

Your group What it means
Child under 4 Sits inside the carriage
One child aged 4 to 13 and one adult The adult sits near the child and watches them
Two children aged 4 to 13 and one adult One adult may watch up to 2 children within arm's reach
Adult with a child who is also on a sill An adult on a sill watches one child on a sill

If your group has younger and older children, think about who sits where before you travel. Some children will want the sill and some will not. Talk about it at home.

Can you book a sill seat?

We do not know of a way to book a specific sill place. The railway gives you a carriage on arrival, and you sit in the same carriage on the way back. Ask the railway if you have a special need.

Safety tips

  • Wear closed shoes. Loose items can fall.
  • Hold your phone and camera with care. Do not lean out.
  • Keep your hands and legs inside the lines the crew set.
  • Follow the crew's instructions at all times.

Weather and comfort

The carriages have open sides. A cool day feels cooler in the hills. Bring a jumper or a rain jacket.

If the day you want is sold out

Sill seats are not a separate ticket. They come with your carriage place. If your day is full, see what to do when Puffing Billy is sold out. Weekdays are quieter, and Belgrave to Lakeside runs every day.
